Re: In the news...
I'm not sure if it made the news over there but a huge tornado touched down yesterday about 70 miles South of Ryan. The pictures of the devistation actually brought tears to my eyes. Whole streets turned to kindling, cars stacked up like matchbox toys. When I left for work there were 51 confirmed dead and as 2 schools were hit, there are still at least 2 dozen children missing. All this in a town that got hit in 1999 by almost the exact same thing.
Re: In the news...
Here's an aerial shot of how it looks. I'm pretty sure that's one of the schools at the bottom of the picture.

Re: In the news...
It has made the news over here, it looks dreadful
Fortunatly the death toll is confirmed as 24 now, not as high as originally thought in the chaos (as of 30 mins ago).
It seems a lot of the presumed dead have turned up with minor injuries, thankfully. Still, 24 dead is awful, and I'm sure a lot will be children.

Re: In the news...
The death toll is 50 + 41 yet to be recovered from the school. This exact area has actually been hit by 3 tornados in the past 15 years. Its just that this one and the 1999 one ran the same near exact same path. Also, in the photo that Shane provided, the bottom center shows the school were the kids were at.

Re: In the news...
That's odd guys, NBC, Fox, NYT etc. are all reporting 24 dead including 9 children. I guess we'll not really know the real figure for about a week until everything is getting back into order

Re: In the news...
You are correct Jess, the other figures were before a total head count was done and people were found.

Extra aid is already in place and the Red Cross and Salvation Army were on the scene within hours. It's still going to take a long time for them to recover.

Not to mention, the fact that us Oklahomans tend to help each other out as much as possible and get things done.

Re: In the news...
I found it hard to believe when I came across this last night. What a loss to the world, really. I can't really think of anyone who didn't like the man or his work.
To change the subject slightly but along the same lines... over dramatising the news (is that a word?) I sit here watching the news as I eat my dinner and hear that my favorite driver is "under criminal investigation for killing another driver in a race Saturday night." Umm wait, I listen to a radio channel that deals exclusively with the sport and heard the same story but not quite like that. That quote makes it sound like he's going to jail and purposefully drove someone down. What I've heard the last 2 days about the incident, including the 2 press conferences from the investigators, is a little different. The driver who died, got out of his car in traffic and was hit by the other driver (video shows that,) the driver who did the hitting is so upset by the whole thing nobody knows when he will race again (by his own choice,) and the investigators even say there are no criminal charges pending, it is being looked at as a racing accident, and will continue to be looked at that way until all the facts can be gathered.
Yes it is a tragedy but not quite as dramatic as the regional news is making it sound.

Re: In the news...
That story is being covered here aswell Shane. And it's the same over dramatising here.
They do that with everything and it really pisses me off to be honest. I hate making a big deal out of stuff that's not even news. But people seem to love drama

Re: In the news...
How I see it is he got out all pissed off to have a go at the guy who ran him off, got mowed down by another driver who was going at speed aand had no chance of stopping or avoiding him. It's tough but serves him right. He was the one who was who went infront of traffic. The guy who hit him is fucked in the head now, his family will suffer just as much

Re: In the news...
Quite right Stu, I feel sorry for the guy who hit him.
I couldn't help but notice too, on Facebook there's a copy of pages from The Sun newspaper, showing some crappy soap on tv on the front page, then a story on page 11 about 5 war heros being killed. Who writes this crap, and who buys it
I'm glad to say not me, the paper should be ashamed. News on tv is enough, tabloids are rubbish.
