Politically speaking
OK, politics isn't usually my thing, I believe most (probably all) politicians lie a lot of the time, especially when they're up for election. I haven't known a decent move made by a politician that's benefited me at all yet - ever.
Saying that, I really just want to comment on something in the news recently that just amazed me. I have never heard anything so ridiculous as the comment made by a republican senator (Todd Akin) in the USA. He claimed women's bodies can prevent pregnancies in cases of "legitimate rape"
First of all, they can't. Secondly, what is 'legitimate rape'
Basically, the man's a moron. Personally I think perhaps he should be raped (several times would be good) and then maybe he may be able to appreciate how disgusting and damaging his comments were.

Re: Politically speaking
You'll be glad to know that this moron has not only given up his running for office but has also been "asked" to leave his office and anyone who has ever had anything to do with the man has taken cover and won't admit to ever having anything to do with him.
Re: Politically speaking
There are a lot of idiots in politics, and it is a amazing as to the number that are dumfounded by the term rape, and like you said, maybe they ought to meet Bubba in cell block B that could educate them of the term.

I've been watching The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, he's great at showing up politicians for what they really are. I saw him rip Sarah Palin a new one yesterday, brilliant

Jon Stewart is one of the best at doing that. Phill Maher (sp?) is another one who's good at it.
Re: Politically speaking
Bill Maher is a real good one.

Re: Politically speaking
USA elections over - at last. It seems the run up has dragged on for months - even worse than the build up to Christmas
Personally I'm glad Obama is back in, Romney had no clue about foreign policy and is a bit like Prince Philip when it comes to 'foot in mouth' issues
Just 1 example of Romney's idiocy: "I should tell my story. I'm also unemployed." —Mitt Romney, speaking in 2011 to unemployed people in Florida. Romney's net worth is over $200 million.
Couldn't finish my comments without one of my favourite Romney gaffs: "Syria is Iran's only ally in the Arab world. It's their route to the sea." –Mitt Romney during the third presidential debate. In fact, Iran and Syria do not share a border and Iran has direct access to international waters through its large coastline on the Gulf. (Oct. 22, 2012)
Now all the Democrats have to do is wheel out Hilary Clinton for next time and they have that in the bag too

Re: Politically speaking
Prince Phillip is not bad at foreign affairs, he has just been taught the wrong way in which to conduct foreign affairs and also who foreigners really are. Theres nothing wrong with unintentional racism.
Oh and Vermin Supreme should of won presidency, 'an honest friendly politician'!!.

I'm not even going into it but I will say that I'm glad to finally be able to see real commercials rather than political ones. Did I just say that?
Re: Politically speaking

Re: Politically speaking
I'm sure most of you (unless you live on the moon) have heard of the scandal involving ex MP Chris Huhne. Well, I live in Eastleigh, so it seems to be churning up a storm around here.
Funny how most politicians had probably never heard of Eastleigh before the recent election. Now they're here in their droves, even the PM
Every day I have at least 1 person knocking on my door and 1 or 2 pushing 'vote for me' literature through it, with another 6 days to go until voting day it's wearing a bit thin now.

You should put a sign on the door that says 'Communist', atleast they will leave you alone or they might storm the door like they're the Tutonic order.

Re: Politically speaking
In a show of brilliance give the circumstances we have going here, the White House has stopped giving tours (which are arranged by going through your Congressman.) Just in case some of you have missed it, we have what they are calling "sequestered spending freezes" going on right now. Basically the feds have stopped spending money in certain areas until Congress can come up with a workable budget and not being able to pay the tours guides is one of those things not being paid for. In return, Congress has said that they will no longer be paying for the president's golf trips.
The whole thing sounds to me like 2 kids on a playground fighting over the last apple but besides that what an utter waste of time on both parties part. Don't even get me started on what it costs to take a president golfing, that's a whole other discussion.
To top all this off, most of the people getting hurt by this spending freeze are small businesses and the military, many of whom will not have work or be getting paid until someone decides to step up and resolve the whole mess.... but these same Congress people who can't feckin sit down and work these things out decided to give themselves another pay raise and curiously, they will still be getting paid for not doing their job. I should be so lucky.
Now I don't get into politics at all but I heard an announcer on a sports radio show yesterday (of all places) come up with the best resolution for all of this. If they are in office now, come next election, vote for anyone but them. Hell a good portion of our debt could have been taken care of with what these bastards spent on the presidential election ffs!!!
Rant over, thank you for listening.

Re: Politically speaking
Not sure why the President would get his golf trips paid for anyway, surely they're classed as holidays and should be paid for by the President himself? I'm sure he doesn't care after all 1) He gets paid enough to not worry about the expense of a golf trip 2) He's only just finished a golf trip with Tiger Woods, so it'll be a while before he fancies another one anyway
At least we've had enough of the election crap now, LibDems voted in (not by me or anyone I know though) so back to peace and quiet here now

Re: Politically speaking
Actually he make more (salary) than Congress, neither group is really suffering poverty though.
The president earns a $400,000 annual salary, along with a $50,000 annual expense account, a $100,000 nontaxable travel account and $19,000 for entertainment. The most recent raise in salary was approved by Congress and President Bill Clinton in 1999 and went into effect in 2001.

Re: Politically speaking
So the poor man hasn't had a pay rise for 12 years - and he only earns $569,000 (about £378,000) per year
Perhaps he's in the wrong business, that actually doesn't seem a lot for his job title really when you consider what top chief exec's are on for some companies nowadays.

Re: Politically speaking
They aren't supposed to be doing it for the money and what I have there is just his salary, Mr. Obama makes far more than that from his investment income and various other things.
Re: Politically speaking
Just think of the people he'd have on his 'friends' list - he gets to be called 'Mr President' for the rest of his life, and never has to make a reservation at a restaurant. Personally I'd do the job for that alone

Re: Politically speaking
Well, Maggie Thatcher is dead, so ends another era.
I know most seemed to dislike her, but I though she was rather amazing. Not only did she manage to run the country on 4 hours sleep per night, but she seemed more honest than most politicians I've ever seen.
I know she made some bad decisions when she was Prime Minister, but don't they all. She did a lot to progress the cause for women though.
One tough Iron Lady R I P.
